It's a keeper.
I have a collection of over 200 cookbooks, if I had to get rid of them all but one this book would be the one I kept. Volume two would be my next choice.

Just Gotta Have It!
This is the BEST cookbook ever. I have soooo many cookbooks and it seems like this is the only one I ever actually use. Unique recipes, most easy to prepare. My guess is that one of the reasons bed and breakfast inns are so popular is the food... now make it at home too. Buy this book it's great!

most used cookbook.
I have had this cookbook for years it seems ..and give it as gifts.it is falling apartas I always revert back to it.. even though I have over 75 cook books...is'nt it time to do another one?????NANCY.

Spiritual Numerology: Caring for Number One
Published in Paperback by Aurora Publications (February, 2000)
Authors: David J. Pitkin, Roger Mock, David J. Pitkin, and Roger Mock
Average review score:

A Practical Down-to-Earth Book on using Numerology
This is a most unusual book in that (1)it's a great read the first time through, (2)is a "must have" reference manual for the subject and (3)is very down-to-earth and practical. In essence, this is a very well written manual on how to use numerology in identifying your strengths and weaknesses, as well as the cycles in your life. This is the "owner's manual" we should have gotten at birth! Thanks for providing something on numerology that's sensible and useful for everyone!

Great book!
In the last five hours I have DEVOURED the whole book. It is lucid, synthetic in the best sense of that word, humane and inspiring. It's moving and instructive. I really like the quotations from major religions. I am so grateful on behalf of everyone the book reaches that you have done this work and communicated it so manageably.

The Captain Departs: Ulysses S. Grant's Last Campaign
Published in Textbook Binding by Southern Illinois Univ Pr (Trd) (December, 1973)
Author: Thomas M. Pitkin
Average review score:

Superb study of Grant's last year
This is the definitive look at the last year of General Grant. Pitkin writes well and the book is well-researched, factual and reliable. The narrative begins when Grant bites into a peach in the summer of 1884 and thinks an insect has stung him in the throat. In fact this was the first signal that he was suffering from throat cancer. Pitkin guides the reader through the maze of pain and suffering Grant endured while writing his magnificent memoirs. You will learn about his near-death episode in April, 1885 when the doctors believed he was about to die. Instead Grant miraculously ralied and lived another three months, enough time to complete his book.

Also included are descriptions of the important personal relationships in Grant's life. You will meet his four children, his devoted wife, and Mark Twain, the man who adored Grant and who became his publisher. Anyone who reads this book will come away with a renewed appreciation for Grant's valor, courage and tremendous ability to withstand pain in order to provide a financial legacy to his destitute family. I highly recommend this book, it's exceptional.

Cooking for Diabetics

Cooking for Diabetics
Receipes are easy to follow and delicious. Exchange values are listed, as well as the calories, fats, carbohydrates, protein, cholesterol, sodium and potassium. Thus this book is handy for those on low cholesterol and/or low salt diets.

We bought our first copy when I cooked for my mother, a diabetic who also had to watch her salt intake. We enjoyed the variety of dishes so much, we still use the book ten years after she died. Now that my brother has developed diabetes, I'm ordering another copy for him. Mine is too worn to pass on and I really don't want to give it up.

Great Chefs of the Caribbean: From the Television Series Great Chefs of the Caribbean (Great Chefs)

Carribean in my kitchen....
Ahh, the pictures alone are mouth watering. I suggest you might want to have a snack before reviewing this yummy experience. Have you ever been to the Caribbean? This book helped prepare me for my vacation and at times a simple meal accompanied with a light Caribbean beat, takes me back, back to my enchanted place. My favorite recipe is Grilled Baby Lamb Chops by Chef Norma Shirley at the Warfside in Jamaica. And yes I will say with the detailed instructions, after the second try, I nailed this morsel. I have prepared a few dishes for guest who are natives of the East Coast (I am from California ;o), two friends are from New York, another from Florida) and even they taste flavors that remind them of restaurants you can't find in California. Some of the ingredients are hard to find, but they do assist with information to substitute as well as where to look if you insist on having the ingredients as authentic as possible. The only bad part is, you will have no leftovers, everyone will eat everything. Buy it, for the sake of calories!

Journey into the Rainforest
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr Childrens Books (August, 2001)
Authors: Tim Knight, Juan Pablo Moreiras, and Linda Pitkin
Average review score:

Good generic overview of the rainforest
This is a beautifully done book. Readers are incorporated into a journey into the rainforest where they learn about preparations for the trip, human activities and life in the area, rainfall, life in the different areas of the rainforest, terms, adaptations of plants and animals and more.

This book is a good introduction for younger readers and is a refreshing change from some of the other works that outline specific areas of the rainforest (like the layers) and rant and rave about loss of biodiversity.

Although the book touches on the important points it provides a good introductory overview and introduces words, concepts, plants and animals for further research.

The ending leaves room for futher adventures in a sequel -- or for the teacher to explore with the class. I found this book when looking for texts for a more advanced workshop that I teach. I would recommend it as part of a rainforest curriculum package.

There and Then: A Vermont Childhood
Published in Hardcover by Fithian Press (March, 1997)
Author: Olive Pitkin
Average review score:

A vivid memoir of growing up in Vermont.
Dr. Pitkin presents a warm and nostalgic image of a Vermont childhood in the 1920-1930's. The book includes descriptive reminiscences of her parents' backgrounds in more remote areas of Vermont. In spite of some inaccuracies in names of people (Miss Welch, not Miss Walsh), and churches ( St. Francis De Sales and Sacred Heart are two churches in Bennington), the author develops a warm and pleasant account of friends, activities, and school and church life in small-town Vermont. The reviewer hopes that the author will continue with memoirs of her high school years.

Ghosts of the Northeast
Published in Paperback by Aurora Publications (June, 2002)
Author: David J. Pitkin
Average review score:

BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN COMPENDIUM
I often purchase books thru Amazon and then resell after I've read them, but I think I'll keep this little gem. You'll get your money's worth here. At just under four-hundred pages, Ghosts of the Northeast is jampacked with entertaining stories ranging from a few paragraphs to two or three pages in length. Most are accompanied by original drawings and photos of the haunted sites. Granted, a building is a building, but some of these places look pretty spooky and it's nice to see just what the author is writing about. He includes brief background on people and structures before delving into their paranormal histories. I was particularly pleased at the contemporary feel of this book. Some books in this genre relay events which seem too dated to be relevant, but Pitkin includes many ocurrences from the 1990's thru 2001. The author is personable and very spiritual - he doesn't shy away from his beliefs in God and an afterlife. He is also responsible in warning his readers not to pursue the occult, particularly thru seances and ouija boards. I don't hold much credence in earthbound spirits. I think many entities emanate from a potentially evil realm we may never understand. Nevertheless, I enjoyed his presentations immensely.

A Must For Those Who Collect Ghost Stories
I had a hard time putting this book down!! Well written stories that come straight from the people who witnessed the events!! It was nice to see photos of the places the stories were written about. This will definately be added to my collection of ghost books. I hope Mr.Pitkin continues to research ghost stories and pass them along to us!!

A Really Good Book
I'm sick to death of books that spend 15 pages telling you the history of a building or area-histories that are often spurious or just folklore-and then end the chapter with, "There are some who say that if you listen on a windy night..." These are not books about ghosts-they're collections of legends and they're pretty much useless to anyone who is actually interested in ghosts.
Pitkin's book is more in the style of the collections made by the early SPR-he is interested in the ghostly experiences of his subjects, not the history of the county they're in. Mr. Pitkin has spent his time wisely, interviewing witnesses instead of reading travelogues. The people in this book have seen apparitions, have watched the movement of objects when no one or thing was influencing them, etc. For some reason this is rare these days. I highly recommend this book and I hope Mr. Pitkin writes more like it.

The American Country Inn and Bed & Breakfast Cookbook: More Than 1,700 Crowd-Pleasing Recipes from 500 American Inns

Great Ideas for Food and Travel in One Great Book.....
This review refers to "The American Country Inn and Bed & Breakfast Cookbook"(vol 1) by Kitty and Lucian Maynard....

St Chuck Poolside Jambalaya to North Carolina Applsauce Muffins, Aunt Ruth's Baked Eggs and Cheese to Dorothy's Chocolate Zucchini Cake, Guacamole to Lobster Pie to Salt Lake City Taffy, you'll find the biggest and best collection of regional homestyle cooking from all over this great food lovin country in this fabulous cookbook!

Whatever type of fare you have in mind you'll find something good in these pages. The Manyard's have done all the work. State to State(including Alaska and Hawaii) they have found us some great recipes from Country Inns and Bed and Breakfast's from all over the country. With more than 1700 homestyle recipes you really get your money's worth.

You can go state to state(without leaving home) and try something new and different, or find some of your old favorites that you've been longing for.
There are two indexes to check through. You can check by city, or by food. For a good look at what's inside, the book, click on the 'Look Inside" link to several pages to browse through. The recipes range from meals as simple as Biscuits and Eggs to the more exotic tastes like Veal Scallops with Gorgonzola Sauce. You'll find several different ways of making the most everyday things, like French Toast, depending on what State or Regional taste you're in the mood for that day!

There's an additional perk to this cookbook as well. If you want to get out of your own kitchen and do a little traveling, you will find a little description as well as the addresses and phone numbers for all the Inn's used here, on the pages with their own recipes. In some cases there are nice little sketches of the lodgings as well.

I use this cookbook more than any other in my kitchen. although I haven't loved every single thing I've tried, it is stained and sticky with the remnants of some terrific recipes(some of my favorite pages are in worse shape than others!). Everytime I look through it for a new idea I find one. I love it! You will too.

So have fun, eat hardy and try to get someone else to do the clean-up.....enjoy...Laurie

the american country inn and bed and breakfast cookbook
This cookbook is great !!!! i borrowed it from a friend and never gave it back (bad!!!) but it really is a great source for entertaining. Fanstastic and easy recipes. A good way to impress your friends with your cooking. Also what i like is they usually have serveral recipes for similar dishes so lets say you want to make scalloped potatoes - you can look at them all and then kind of use the info to make your own variation with the pieces of the recipes you think sound good. Also it is good if you are doing theme parties. I love asian cooking we were having a party where i needed to bring an asian salad - they have like 5 different types. and they arent what you would expect. Note this is just not breakfast foods - all types of cooking are in this book and from all types of us regions.

Cooking the BEST!!!!
My husband just surprised me with a weekend at one of the B&B's in this book. We were getting away for our 8th year wedding anniversary. And he bought me a copy of this cookbook he wants me to make some of the same dishes that we were treated to during our stay. This is something that is such a special treat. I LOVE to make dishes for our family when they come to visit. I like to see the looks on their faces when they are treated to dishes that are simply out of this world. There are just no other words to explain the recipes in this cookbook. You'll always want to keep it handy. You won't find any recipes in here that require alot of hard work or foods that most of us don't have in our kitchens everyday.

Saratoga County Ghosts
Published in Paperback by Aurora Publications (July, 2001)
Author: David J. Pitkin
Average review score:

Highly recommended
Using this book as a guide, some friends and I located some of these haunted locations and visited - great fun! David Pitkin did a fantastic job of putting these stories together! Easy and fun reading. I highly recommend buying this book. Wonderful to learn about the history of Saratoga County, a beautiful place with much history, and many of its alleged ghosts.

surprised
I was totally surprised while reading this book. To my amazement there was a story in there about my own family. I had always heard stories about my uncles house being haunted in Clifton Park but only somewhat believed it. The incident happened well before I was even born, it happened on the night of my fathers senior prom when his sister in law killed her husband three kids and then herself. It is so surreal to see it in writing.

Finally the truth!
Growing up in Saratoga County, I have heard bits and peices of the happenings in this book, and finally I found someone interested enough to search for the whole truth. David I commend you, and I recommend this book to all. My family and I got to meet David as he autographed our book, and he told us of another book he is working on...David, I will be waiting. Thanks for a job well done!
